Lesson 3 Vocabulary Access

1. Ascending Sort- Any sort that can be (A-Z or 1-10).
2. Calculated Field- To perform calculations in a query.
3. Concatenation- To perform mathematical calculations on the data it retrieves, to link the entries in two fields into a text string.
4. Criteria- allows you to work with a limited set or records that have the data you need.
5. Descending Sort- Any sort that can be (Z-A or 10-1).
6. Expression- a formula that calculates a value or defines criteria; in Access, you can use an expression to calculate new values or to specify which records should be displayed.
7. Filter- one or more criterion that you can apply to a datasheet to display a subset or records. Those records that do not meet criterion are "filtered out" and are not displayed in the subset of records.
8. Filter by Form- a filtering technique in which you can type the values for which you want to filter using a form that contains all the fields in the datasheet.
9. Filter by Selection- a filtering technique in which you select a value or partial value for which you want to filter using the filter by selection button.
10. Select Query- The most common type of query in Access, the select query retrieves specific data from one or more tables and displays the results in a datasheet; however, it does not alter the data in the table(s)

Lesson 2 Vocabulary Access

1. Data type: In Access, a field property that determine what type of data the field can contain.
2. Export: The process of copying data from an access table or query to another database or to another type of file.
3. Field Name: The name by which access recognizes a data field.
4. Field Property: A specific attribute of an access data field, such as name, caption, field size or input mask.
5. Import: The process of copying data from another source, such as a database or spreadsheet, into an access database.
6. Input Mask: in access, a field property that determines display format and limits the type of data that can be entered.
7. Junction Table: in access, a table that provides a link between two tables that have a many-to-many relationship.
8. Link: the connection between a source file and a destination file, or between two tables.
9. Look up Field: in access, a field that looks up a list of values in another table or in a static list and presents the list of values for data entry selection.
10. Many-to-Many Relationships: in access, a relationship between two tables in which each table can have many related records in the other table.
11. One-to-Many Relationships: in access, a relationship between two tables in which only one table can have many related records in the other table.
12. One-to-One Relationships: in access, a relationship between two tables in which each table has only one related record in the other table.
13. Orphan: in access records in a related table that are left unrelated if their related record in the primary table is deleted or changed so that the relationship is broken.
14. Primary Key: in access, one of more fields in a table whose values uniquely identify each record.
15. Primary Table: in access, the table on the "one" side of a one-to-many relationships.
16. Referential Integrity: a system of rules that access uses to ensure that relationships between records in related tables are valid, and that you done accidentally delete or change related data.
17. Related Table: in access, the table on the "many" side of a one-to-many relationship.
18. Relationships: in access, the association between two tables that share a field with matching values; the matching fields allow the tables to be joined, so that a query can select data from both tables.
19. Subdatasheet: in access, a data sheet that is nested within another data sheet and contains records related to the records in the data sheet in which it is nested.

1. Database - is a collection of data, or information , related to a specific subject and kept together in a file.

2. Database Object - provides a structure through which you can store your data.

3. Database Window - used to access database objects contained in the database.

4. Datasheet - is the row-and-column-format.

5. Datasheet View - to add, modify, or delete data in a table or query.

6. Design View - to set or change the structure of any object.

7. Field - Every row is a unique record that contains all the data for a particular item.

8. Form - a window into the data on one or more tables.

9. Form View - commonly used because it allows you to view the fields for only one record at a time.

10. Print Preview - allows you to see how the data will look when you print a report.

11. Query - looks like a table, but it doesn't contain any data contain any data itself; instead, it displays only specific data from tables based on the criteria you supply.

12. Record - every row that contains all the data for a particular item.

13. Record Selector - you can select an entire record by clicking the record selector, a small gray box to the left of each record.

14. Relational Database - allows you to store categories of data in separate tables, yet combine data from any of the tables.

15. Report - a professional-looking printout of database data that usually contains summary information.

16. Table - is the only object in an Access database that contains data.
